Comparative Analysis of XLPE and Thermoplastic Insulation-Based HVDC Power Cables

The application of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cables to voltage sourced converter (VSC)-based high direct current (HVDC) systems has already been technically verified and become common, thermoplastic (TP) is attracting attention as an insulation material for next-generation due the recent development material-related technologies. However, studies related TP are mainly focused on improving properties, cable insufficient. In this paper, XLPE were designed VSC-based HVDC systems, major characteristics such electric field distribution thermal stability compared analyzed through overvoltage simulation. design method was presented, performed using materials. temperature profiles also a finite element To analyze performance cable, it simulated with PSCAD/EMTDC program.
